Building Trades unions combine efforts to pass responsible contractor legislation

When it comes to public construction projects in Minnesota, the law says that the lowest responsible bidder gets the job. What constitutes a “responsible bidder” wasn’t clearly defined in the law, however.

Too often, unscrupulous contractors skirt the law to win bids on taxpayer-funded projects. During the recent legislative session, the unions of the Minnesota Building & Construction Trades spearheaded an effort to rectify this, culminating in passage of a bill establishing criteria that contractors must meet when they submit bids to state or local governments. For Building Trades, state’s infrastructure investments mean ‘millions of work hours’

Utilizing the first state budget surplus in seven years, state legislators pushed the value of a package of public infrastructure investments passed during the 2014 Legislative Session to over $1 billion.

Gov. Mark Dayton signed off on the construction bill May 20, green-lighting projects across the state that will create “millions of work hours” for union members in the coming years, according to Harry Melander, president of the Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council. Read more »

Building Trades remember those killed and injured on the job

Minnesota’s Building Trades unions gathered Friday at the state Capitol to remember those killed and injured on the job in the past year.

The commemoration was part of annual Workers Memorial Day activities held around the country to mark the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

In a solemn ceremony, union members held white crosses with the names of the dead and a bell was tolled at the site of the Minnesota Workers Memorial on the Capitol grounds. Read more »

Trades remember the fallen, renew call for safety in Workers Memorial Day ceremony

The Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council held its annual Workers Memorial Day observance last Friday, honoring nine union workers who died over the previous year as a result of workplace injuries or illnesses.

The ceremony, held at the Workers Memorial Garden on the State Capitol grounds, included remarks from St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, who renewed the call for safe workplaces and good jobs for all workers. Read more »

Maryland Passes Responsible Contracting Law

Yesterday, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) signed a bill that protects taxpayers by prohibiting private contractors who have broken the law from obtaining contracts with the state. Read more »


The AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust (HIT) today announced $33 million of pension capital funding for construction of Five 15 on the Park, a 259-unit apartment complex in Minneapolis. The $52 million project is expected to generate approximately 260 union construction jobs at a time when construction unemployment remains high. Read more »
