Minnesota State Building and Construction Trades Council selects its first Executive Director

On February 26, 2018, the Minnesota State Building and Construction Trades Council announced Carly Melin as its first Executive Director. Melin will provide leadership and carry out the directions of the State Building Trades Executive Board and its 70,000+ members.

Fatal on-the-job injuries rose by 7 percent in 2016; construction again accounts for a large share

More than 5,000 U.S. workers – 14 every day -- were fatally injured on the job in 2016, a 7 percent increase from 2015. (The numbers are from a Bureau of Labor Statistics report using the most recent figures available.)

The 5,190 deaths in 2016 were up from 4,836 the year before and the injury rate also rose to 3.6 deaths per 100,000 full-time workers, up from 3.4/100,000 in 2015, BLS added. Read more »

Exhibit on tradeswomen and original builders opens at Capitol

One section focuses on the role of women in constructing the Capitol. The other shows tools and objects made and used by the original tradespeople who built the statehouse.  The display grew out of the Labor Education Service's “Who Built Our Capitol?” project that uncovered more than 620 of the original builders from1896-1905.

Today Governor Mark Dayton announced Tina Smith as his choice to finish Sen. Al Franken's term.  Secretary-Treasurer Craig Olson of the MN State Building and Construction Trades Council expressed his support for the decision saying, "Minnesotans will be well served when Lt. Governor Tina Smith moves into her new role as our U.S. Senator. Hundreds of Mankato and SW Minnesota Students Attend Construction Trades Expo

Nearly 1,000 Mankato-area high school students will participate Tuesday, October 24 and Wednesday, October 25th  in Construct Tomorrow, an apprentice program that is being sponsored by the Mankato Building Trades to provide a hands-on introduction to careers in the skilled building trades to area high school students. Volunteer Pipefitters keep heat on for homeowners in need
